This year’s National Preparedness Month theme from FEMA and Ready.gov is “Don’t Wait.”
Communicate and Make Your Emergency Plan Today. Disasters such as storms, flooding, hurricanes, and fires occur year-round throughout North America, which is why it is so important to be ready.
Creating a plan and practicing it with your family, while learning to communicate effectively during chaos will help keep you and your loved ones stay safe if and when disaster strikes.
Once you have your Emergency Plan created, distribute the plan to every member of your household and also place the plan in easy-to-find locations including your garage, kitchen drawer, and living area.
Ready.gov also recommends making contact cards with emergency numbers for each family member. Place the cards in purses, wallets, vehicles, and backpacks.
Another piece of advice is subscribing to local alert services that will notify you with texts/emails regarding bad weather, closed roads, community crises, and other emergencies.
